3.7 Gaussian Splat Scene Layers
Gaussian splat assets are a 3D scene format supported on model / scene layers alongside conventional glTF meshes. Pantograf detects .splat and Gaussian-splat PLY files when loading Docs media or scene layer sources.
A. Supported formats
| Format | Notes |
|---|---|
.splat | Native Gaussian splat binary |
.ply (Gaussian) | PLY with splat header; non-splat PLY meshes use the standard mesh path |
Drop or attach splat files the same way as other 3D content in 2.1.4 Layers (model source from 2.1.6 Docs or drag-and-drop on the map).
B. Rendering behavior
- Splats render as oriented Gaussian billboards sorted each frame for the current camera.
- Sun shadows are disabled for splat content (standard mesh layers still cast/receive shadows when enabled).
- Transform gumball and scene placement behave like other scene media layers.
C. Limitations
- Very large splat files depend on GPU memory and browser WebGL limits.
- Export to external DCC tools is not provided from the splat viewer; use the source asset file.
